Indigo Exchange
By Jones Designs
Indigo exists in the space between blue and purple—a color long associated with depth, mystery, and transformation. Blue represents both the sky and the sea, symbolizing open spaces, freedom, imagination, and inspiration. In biblical history, indigo is tied to the heavens, representing the divine, spiritual authority, and holiness.
What history books often fail to emphasize is indigo’s role as currency.
In the 1700s, indigo was one of the most valuable commodities in the world. At its peak, profits from indigo outpaced those of sugar and cotton. During the time of the American Revolution, when the dollar held little value, indigo cakes were used as money—a system built on exploitation and human suffering. Indigo cloth was traded, exchanged, and weaponized, with human lives treated as currency.
Indigo Exchange confronts that history.
The expressive lines and layered patterns within this piece are intentionally designed to resemble broken chains, symbolizing liberation, freedom, and reclaimed identity. Each mark represents resistance. Each fracture in the pattern speaks to survival, resilience, and the transformation of pain into purpose.
This piece is not just about color—it is about truth, remembrance, and redefinition. Indigo Exchange invites the viewer to reflect on where value comes from, who defines it, and how history can be confronted, not erased.
This is liberation reimagined.
This is history reclaimed.
